How Do You Give Photographs A Nostalgic Look?
In today’s high-tech camera world, photographs become sharper and sharper and the goal to recreate an exact duplicate of what the eye sees. Yet, we are fascinated by vintage photographs, lured by softened tones and images that portray a world gone by. You can give your photographs a vintage look without traveling backwards through time. Turn to sepia, the vintage standby. Still popular today, most photo-editing software have a sepia setting. If yours doesn’t, desaturate your photograph to black and white, then add a light yellow-brown filter. Apply a vignette. You will recognize the soft fade-to-white border, often oval-shaped around old portraits. Once created in a darkroom, you can apply vignetting to modern photographs to achieve a nostalgic look with your software program. Stage the photo. Use period props to achieve a dated look.
