Though chinchillas should always be bathed in chinchilla dust (fine volcanic ash), there may be times when it is necessary to give them a water bath. 99% of the time, dust can eventually clean your chinchilla’s fur and you just need to be patient. However, for that remaining 1%, a water bath may be the only viable option. The only time I have ever had to give my ten year old chinchilla a water bath was when he jumped into a bowl of cookie dough. I could not get it out of his fur and I could not allow it to remain there either while waiting for the dust to work it out (he could not be allowed to lick or eat the dried dough because of the high sugar and fat content that could be dangerous to him).
