How Do You Get Tested For Fibrous Dysplasia?
A chronic skeletal condition, fibrous dysplasia occurs when part of a bone develops abnormally before birth. Instead of normal bone growth, fibrous tissue grows, causing a deformed and brittle bone. Typically discovered in childhood, it commonly affects the thigh bone, shin bone, pelvis, upper arm bone, ribs and skull. Describe your child’s symptoms to her physician, who then performs a physical examination and likely orders X-rays of the problem area. Have your child’s bone X-rayed. Fibrous dysplasia shows up on the x-ray as an area of the bone appearing like hazy, ground glass, a bowing of the bone or as bone expansion.
