How Do You Get Rid Of The Red When Darkening Or Lightening Hair With Ash Shades?

I’ve had to deal with this problem many times, as most hair color is made for those with “golden” undertones. I have more of an ashy base color, and have finally figured out what I need to do to keep that red out! First, make sure to color your hair using a color that you feel will be appropriate. Look for colors such as “Ash Blond” or “Ash Brown.” Note: the model on the front of the box is NOT the best indicator! Apply color as usual, assess results. If you have too much gold in your hair, you can apply an ash toner to it to minimize this. Follow the instruction on the bottle. To keep your hair gold-free, buy a color-correcting shampoo. The best kind to get is one that is actually purple! It is usually for platinum blondes, or white hair. This conteracts any gold and keeps your color nice and ashy.
