You might check in with the yahoo groups sewing machine repair group called “wefixit” My first guess, if this isn’t a machine in a wooden case, is that you’re smelling bad machine oil, in which case I’d clean the machine of all grease and oil and reassemble with new lubricants (make sure you use the right stuff!)
