A mildew odor can remain on leather items, such as shoes or a leather jacket, even if you cannot see any visible signs of mildew on those leather pieces. You may consider tossing the leather item into the garbage or sending the leather piece to a professional cleaner. The cleaner may not be able to take the item or you might be charged a lot of money to have the item cleaned. Two liquids can be combined to remove mildew odors from leather and saving you some cash in the process. Pour one cup of cool water and one cup of denatured alcohol into a bowl, bucket or similar container. Dip a cotton ball into the liquid mixture. Be sure to wring out excess moisture as the cotton ball should be moistened, not dripping wet. Wipe the portion of leather that has a mildew odor. Be sure to cover all of that area with the liquid from the cotton ball.
