The short and most risky answer would be Ammo-lock or some other form of ammonia neutralizer. But these products do not remove the ammonia or its cause. Here is the long answer. When starting a new aquarium an ammonia spike is inevitable, as is the following nitrite. This must be waited out before stocking with fish. “Seasoned” or established tank filters will already have the bacteria required to break down waste into reasonably safe nitrate. If your tank is established then you must treat the cause before you treat the ammonia. Check your filter is working properly, are any of the fish dead? Is there excess food in the tank? Once you have removed the source of the ammonia there are a few methods to remedy the situation. Various types of ammonia “removing” filter media are available from any good aquarium shop in the form of filter pads or large granules. You could ad a bacteria booster which is also available at any g.a.s. I do not advocate using any ammonia or nitrite “neutralizing”
