If you live in a humid climate, or your carpet was left wet say under a box and molded, there are a few ways to clean it up. Locate the source of the moldy smell first. Remove anything that may be in or on the area of the strongest smelling area. Get your spray bottle out, and fill it up with about one quarter vinegar, and the rest of the way with water. Thoroughly vacuum the area you are going to clean first. Spray the area until it’s fairly wet, but not totally drenched, with your vinegar and water solution. Allow to set for about three minutes, then blot dry as much as you can, using a dry cloth. As soon as you’ve done that, go ahead and layer a few paper towels over the damp spot and step on them, continuing to step on and off the paper towels, and re-doing this step until you get the vinegar and water solution on the carpet as dry as you can with paper towels.
