How Do You Get Published In A Trade Magazine?
If you are trying to become published, or to simply become published in more venues, one market that is often overlooked is trade magazines. While everyone else is trying to break in to consumer publications, you can cash in on what you already know. Determine something that you have expert knowledge about. For example, before (or during) your freelance writing career, what did you do? Do you have knowledge about the retail industry? Did you work at a non-profit agency for several years? Write down all of your jobs and consider what you know. Search the Internet for trade magazines that pertain to your experience and expertise. If possible, get your hands on a hard copy or two for research. At the very least, read articles and information they have posted online, and look for an editorial calendar. Write a letter of introduction to the editor. Outline your experience with that particular trade, and include your writing resume. If you have applicable clips, send those along as well. Ask
