It is best if you obtain your proof of citizenship and have the documents on hand in case anyone asks. If you wait until you need them, you may be out of luck because it takes time to get the documents you need. Get a copy of your birth certificate if you were born in the United States. This document is accepted as proof of citizenship. It must be a certified copy from your local registrar’s office. It will have a raised seal. Get a copy of your naturalization certificate. If you lost the one you received when you were naturalized, you will need to order a new one from immigration support (see Resources). Apply for a passport. This will prove citizenship for anyone who was born outside of the United States, but has parents who were born in the United States. You will need to prove your paren
