How do you get David Gilmours sound on a 100 watt marshall amp?
From www.Gilmourish.com, Bjorn Riis’ comments about Marshall amps for the David Gilmour sound: “Personally I think that Marshall amps in general aren’t ideal for David’s tones. I know there are many (strong) opinions about this but I find them to be a bit too aggressive and the clean channel lack some character and depth. Still, you can get some wonderful tones with classics like JCM 800 and a 1959 Super Lead 100w Plexi, especially with a high output speaker cabinet.” Throughout his career, David Gilmour’s amplifier set-up consisted of 2 or 3 Hiwatt DR103 Heads with 4 WEM Super Starfinder 4×12 200 watt cabinets loaded with Fane Cresendo speakers. Gilmour started using the Hiwatt/WEM combination during the summer of 1969 (but didn’t start using them in the sudio until they recorded music for the 1970 soundtrack, “Zabriske Point”) to 1983 (“The Final Cut”) and again in 1988 (second leg of the “Delecate Sounds of Thunder” tour), 1994 (“Pulse” tour) and 2006 (“On An Island” and tour).
