According to Business.gov, a business must obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN) if the business has employees or if the business operates under certain structures such as a partnership or corporation. An EIN is also required for other entities including trusts and estates. The official application is Form SS-4. The form may be completed by phone, fax or mail. However, online completion is the easiest method and results in the immediate assignment of an EIN. Access the IRS website and select “Businesses” from the banner near the top of the screen.
