Step 1 Use the Web site of the Massachusetts Department of Education as your primary resource (see the Who Can Help section below) as you work toward your certification. Step 2 Complete a degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Step 3 Complete a Massachusetts-approved teacher preparation program. Step 4 Pass the Communication and Literacy Skills Test portion of the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL). Step 5 Complete the content assessment portions of the MTEL in the areas you plan to teach. Step 6 Finish the application process, which includes fingerprinting and a limited criminal background check. This leads to a Preliminary Teacher License. Step 7 Complete the steps required if you are from out of state. These include completion of a sta
