Many people want to teach English in China as a way to get to know the country and make money doing it. It can be a lot of fun, but there are pitfalls. You do not need to be certified. Some schools are so desparate that you don’t even need to be a native English speaker. Choose the area of China where you want to be. China’s climate is similar to the US, so decide if you prefer cold winters or hot summers. Choose a city or a region which interests you. And realize that both your pay and your cost of living will vary depending upon where you locate. For example, in Shanghai you might be paid over $1000 US per month, but the cost of living will also be more expensive. Locating in a small city will mean you are more isolated so make sure you are prepared to be totally immersed in a foreign culture.
