Working in a veterinarian’s office is a rewarding, yet challenging, job. A love for animals is not enough–you have to be able to relate well to the clients, listen to directions, clean up after the animals, and be able to restrain animals when the vet needs assistance. Veterinary assistants and technicians perform the same work for a veterinarian that a nurse provides for the doctor. Most veterinary technicians begin by acquiring a two-year associate’s degree from an AVMA accredited university. This degree teaches students how to perform the clinical and technical aspects of the job. A student will get hands-on experience doing an externship at a local clinic.
