A Drafter, or Draftsman, uses his drawing and drafting skills to take a designers concepts and transfer them to detailed drawings on paper. Although most drafting is now done using the CADD system, a computer aided design tool, draftsman are still capable of creating comprehensible plans using only manual skills. Decide if you have the right personality, skills, and background. Drafters must be detail oriented, and have good eye hand coordination. They should have good drawing skills and artistic ability. They must be able to take direction and work as part of a team. Get the right training. While in High School, anyone interested in drafting as a career should study geometry, trigonometry, science, computer technology, and design. They should also take any drafting, or other related courses available.
