There are many steps that must be taken in order to get a green card through marriage to a U.S. citizen. Many people are under the erroneous assumption that U.S. citizenship is automatically granted to resident aliens who marry a citizen, but this is not the case. The path to a green card through marriage depends on a number of factors, including your immigration status at the time of the marriage, and whether you marry inside or outside of the U.S. Before you get started, take a moment to review the instructions on the green card application (form I-485), as well as the application itself, to make sure you are admissible to the U.S. as a permanent resident.
