Don’t get suckered into paying for a recall report. The NHTSA (the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) lets you check for recalls on your vehicle for free. Manufacturing or engineering problems often lead to recalls; some recalls are minor, some are major. Get your free car recall report from the NHTSA. Visit the NHTSA website by going to “www.safercar.gov.” Click on “Safety Recalls” on the right side of the screen. Click on “Search Our Recall Database” to begin. Select “Vehicle” and choose “Search Selected Type.” Choose your model year from the drop-down box, and then click “Submit Model Year.” Choose the make of your vehicle from the drop-down box (Chevrolet, Mazda, Toyota, etc.), and then click “Submit Make.” Choose the model of your vehicle from the drop-down box, and then click “Submit Model.” Click on the check box to compile a report of every recall on the vehicle, past or present.
