Want to make the weaning process go as smoothly as possible? Weaning doesn’t have to be hard for mother or baby. Done properly, it can be a peaceful, relaxed experience for both of you. When you are ready to begin weaning the first thing to do is observe baby’s nursing habits. Is baby on a schedule or is she nursing on demand? When does baby eat solids most often? Does baby take a bottle at all? What times of day? If baby is still nursing on demand and you’d like to begin weaning, the first thing to do is get baby on a more scheduled eating plan! Get baby nursing no more than every three hours throughout the day first. Once baby is nursing every three hours (or less), decide which nursing session to drop first. If baby eats really well at lunch, you could start by dropping that after-lunch nurse. If baby is starting to be too busy playing in the afternoon to nurse, just stop offering the breast at that time. Replace that nursing session with a bottle or sippy cup instead. After a week
