How Do You Gear Up For A Ski Trip?

If you’re asking to gear up for the mountain then I have your answer.  First and foremost, transportation.  Know whos going, who isn’t; who can drive and who can’t.  An early morning drive for some is easier than the drive after hitting the slopes all day long.  Make sure you know how much gas it will take to get there and calculate for stops if need be.  Trust me, spending money to fill up your tank on the mountain will be worse than if you fill up half an hour before hand down the mountain.  As for being on the mountain, make sure you have appropriate gear for the weather, food and medical supplies.  If you’re riding on a powder day, chances are it may be a little colder, so make sure you have some thick gear, the higher the down number you have in your jacket, the warmer it will be.  Same with grams for insulation and breathability.  go for 3-5 thousand mm breathability in heavier jackets because it will keep the heat in, 10-15 thousand mm in light jackets for warm spring days so you get some airflow to keep you from stinkin’ it up with your sweat.  This info also goes with pants.  Always make sure a few days before you go up your gear is in good condition, edged correctly, waxed, and bindings tightened.  If not go to any local boardshop or Sports Authority, they’ll do it for you and it’s a small fee of $15 – $25 I believe.  If you’re not sure how to DIY give it to a professional, edging can ruin a board and you don’t want to replace an edge or buy a new board when the old one was perfectly good.  Don’t forget helmets, they don’t look goofy Shawn White performing the Tomahawk.  Not all of us are that good, but we all take the same hit from hard stuff.  Ice, burried rocks and tree branches hurt just the same and can knock you out if you’re not prepared.  Food is essential on the mountain, when you ride you get hungry, simple as that.  Great snacks are protein bars and sports drinks.  Keep your electrolytes up and carbs high so that you’re more alert and ready for action and you can eat and drink on the go.  Stopping to eat will get you out of the groove, especially when you eat and drink warm soup and hot cocoa.  Chowders mean lots of fat, and thats bad.  It makes you feel more tired and you’ll perform worse, unless you’re planning on chilling for an hour, then by all means go for it.  But if you’re planning on some intense riding, make sure to carry light with the most punch.  Always bring some kind of first aid kit.  Whether you break a leg or sprain a wrist, you’ll have some wrap to hold it or splint it until the ambulance makes its way.  Sometimes it could take an hour, so this way you’re prepared to wait.  Well I hope all this helps, so keep up the love of the mountain, ride some gnar groomers, some excellent pow, and any conditions inbetween. – Kekona ;]
