All hot water heaters need to be flushed on a yearly basis. Over time, sediment can build up in the bottom of the tank. This sediment can interfere with the unit’s efficiency and even shorten the life of the heater. The sediment can also enter, even inundate, the hot water piping if it accumulates enough. Flushing the hot water system will extend the life of the heater and increase the overall efficiency of the gas burning unit. Shut off the gas supply to the water heater. Follow the instructions on the gas heater for your particular make and model. Open the hot water faucets to remove the majority of the hot water from the tank. Run the faucets in the kitchen sink, bathtub and the bathroom sink. Allow the water to flow until it feels only warm to the touch. Attach the garden hose to the drain at the bottom of the hot water tank. Run the hose outdoors or to the nearest drain.
