Shimano shifters are known for their shifting accuracy, dependability and long lifespan. However, some very old models of Shimano stem and down tube shifters have become finicky with their age, and may shift erratically, or not at all. Rather than taking your bike to the shop to be fixed, get it back into shifting and running condition by fixing your old shifters at home. Set your bicycle in a work stand, on its kickstand, or upside down on its handlebars and stem so that it will not tip or fall while you are working. Set both shifters to their base gear. Usually this is the highest gear on the rear shifter, and the lowest gear on the front shifter, but this will vary depending on your specific shifter design. If you have down tube shifters, simply set each one parallel to the down tube. Set the barrel adjusters on both shifters and the rear derailer to their base setting.
