One common problem when scanning photos is that the fine details are sometimes lost. In particular, text in scanned in photos often becomes pixelated, with the edges developing what are known as “jaggies.” Fortunately, this problem is easily solved even if you don’t have an expensive graphics program like Photoshop. You can instead turn to the freeware program GIMP, which has many of the same tools and functions as Photoshop. Step 1 Go to GIMP.org and download the latest stable version of GIMP. Don’t download a beta version, since these still have bugs. Install GIMP to your system. Step 2 Scan in the photo you want to use. Use a high resolution (at least 600 DPI) in order to reduce the pixelation. If it is an image that has already been scanned in, transfer it to your hard drive. Step 3 Open GIMP.
