Laptop keyboards are impressive pieces of engineering. They’re designed to be lightweight, dust- and spill-resistant and take up far less space than a standard PC keyboard. Unfortunately, this means that they’re also fragile and prone to key breakage. However, HP’s laptop keyboards are simple to repair. Examine the key or keys that are missing. The laptop keyboard comprises several kinds of parts. These include keycaps, a pair of retaining clips per key and the membrane keyboard below. Keycaps are the parts of the key you normally see. The have the letters or numbers printed on them. The retaining clips hold the keycaps securely to the keyboard. These small plastic parts hinge together and clip into the keycap and keyboard surface. The actual keyboard lies below all of that. It’s a pair of plastic circuit boards sandwiched between a couple pieces of metal. The metal top has holes in it with membrane bumps in them and places to attach the retaining clip. Reassemble your retaining clips.
