Uneven lawn cuts are a result of an uneven deck. If you are experiencing scalping, staggering, or any type of uneven cut, your deck should be adjusted. Working on the deck of the mower means working with the blades, so before you begin, turn the mower off. Take out the ignition key and remove the spark plug. This may save an arm or a finger should the machine accidentally engage when you are working on the deck. Step 1 Park the tractor on a solid, level surface and place the deck lift lever in the top notch position. Rotate each blade so that they are perpendicular to the tractor. Step 2 Use a tape measure and measure the distance from the outside of the left and right blade tip to the ground. Both measurements must be equal for an even cut. Step 3 Loosen the hex cap screw located on the left deck hanger bracket. Use a wrench and balance the deck by turning the adjustment gear, which is found directly behind the hex cap screw.
