How Do You Fix Dry Rot Wood?
“Dry rot” is wood that has been exposed to moisture, producing an exceptional environment for fungus to grow. The fungus spreads a network of threads over the surface of the wood and creates a spongy porous look and feel. After cleaning away the moisture and fungus, the exposed wood reveals a rotten texture. Large areas of dry rot need to be replaced with new wood, but smaller areas can be repaired. Before beginning repairs, locate the source of the moisture and fix it first. Step 1 Using a putty knife scrape away the rotted pieces of wood. Scrap the wood that is crumbly, but leave the wood that is reasonably sturdy. Allow to dry. Step 2 Drill shallow holes all over the section of wood where dry rot has been removed, using a drill with a 3/16th-inch bit. Do not drill through the wood. The holes hold the epoxy, providing a more secure base. Step 3 Fill holes with epoxy. After filling holes, use a paint brush to brush epoxy across the wood surface. This creates a solid base for the wood
