If you have cable broadband Internet access at home, you probably have already come across times where you lose service. Well, there are some things you can do before you call your service provider. Step 1 Find your cable modem and your router (if you have one). How do you know what is what? Well, the cable modem will have the actual coaxial cable plugged into it. It will be a thick, round cable (often black in color) with a metal, screw-on connector on the end. If you have a router, it will be connected directly to your cable modem using a cable that looks like a thick telephone cable. Step 2 Unplug the power to the cable modem and to the router. This will begin a “power cycle” for the equipment. Step 3 Wait for 15 second, then plug the power back in ONLY for the cable modem. If you have a router, do not plug it back in yet.
