Refrigerators in recreational vehicles use a system known as ammonia absorption refrigeration. The cooling is produced by heating an ammonia/hydrogen mixture, which then goes through a cycle of separation, liquefaction and evaporation, cooling the refrigerator before the two components are re-absorbed to begin the cycle again. The refrigerator must be level for this process to work. These refrigerators operate in gas or electric modes, and will sometimes work in one mode but not the other.
