By using a few basic hand tools and less than a ½-hour of your time, you can fix the pull cord and be on your way to using the engine. Step 1 Remove the thin metal recoil starter unit from the top or the side of the small engine. Use either the 7/16-inch or ½- inch end wrench to remove the three bolts that hold the unit to the small engine. Two bolts are located on either side of the round portion of the recoil unit. The last bolt is situated in the middle of the thin metal cover near the spark plug. Step 2 Pull the recoil unit from the small engine. Turn the unit upside down so the inside spring loaded recoil pulley is facing toward you. Step 3 Wind the pulley in a clockwise direction to tighten the spring loaded mechanism.
