How Do You Fix A Front Loading Washing Machine That Smells Musty?
Many musty odors come from mold or mildew. This is especially true in a closed wet environment like a washing machine. However, the fungus and smell can be removed when running the washing machine empty with particular detergents that attack the smell and its source. Empty the washing machine and start it to the longest cycle. Use cold water and extra rinse if it is available. Pour in twice the amount of bleach recommended for the washer into the detergent port. The recommend amount is often located on the top of the detergent port at the top of the washer. For most washers, this will be about 2 cups. There should be water flowing in the detergent port that will wash the bleach directly into the washer. After the wash cycle is complete, run another cold water wash using vinegar instead of bleach.
