Replacing dislodged keys is a simple process that can be done by nearly anyone, but in some instances the keyboard may have suffered a mechanical defect and may need to be swapped out with a new one. Step 1 Power down your Dell laptop. Rotate the laptop upside down so that you can see the battery. Step 2 Slide over the battery release latch into the “unlocked” position. Pull the battery unit out of the Dell laptop and set it aside. Step 3 Turn the computer back over. Lift open the LCD screen lid to the 90 degree position. Check to see if any of the keys have fallen off the laptop keyboard. Look inside any open holes created by dislodged keys to see if the white plastic retainer is still inside the keyboard.
