Choosing the correctly sized saddle for your horse is just as important and time consuming as choosing the proper pair of shoes for yourself. Imagine an improperly fitting pair of hiking boots taking their toll on your feet half way through a hike on a trail. The weight and motion of the saddle subjects the horse’s back to an enormous amount of stress. The potential for skin abrasion and damage is even more with a poorly fitting saddle. When beginning the process to properly fit a western-style saddle, the first, and perhaps most important step, is to measure the horse. Keep in mind that saddle measurements may vary between saddle makers. The simplest way to measure your horse is to use a drafting tool known as a flexible curve. The purpose is to make a shape form of your horse’s back. Once this is transferred to paper or board, this may be used to match a properly fitting saddle.
