How do you find the value of antiques?
The value of any item is what someone will actually pay for it. This is true for antiques or for brand new merchandise. One very good way to find out what someone has paid for something is to look it up on the Internet.
eBay is a great source of information because it allows you to look up articles similar to yours and see what they have sold for in the past 60 days. It’s easy to use eBay this way- just type in the name of the piece you are trying to evaluate and click Search. A list of things currently for sale will come up. Next, scroll down the page a little bit and click on the phrase “Completed Listings” which appears on the left side of the page. Now stuff like yours that has been listed in the past 2 months pops up. You can sort the list several ways to give a nice price range; sort by Highest First to see the maximum you could expect if your valuable is in mint condition, or sort by Lowest First if your item is in poor condition.
Not sure what exactly your object is? Go to www.google.comand type in what information you DO know about the item. Often the manufacturer will print the name of their company and the year it was produced right onto the merchandise. For example, vintage dolls might have Mattel 1964 printed on the back of her head or on her bottom. Type in what you already know, like “Mattel 1964 blonde doll”, press search and several results appear. Still not sure what you have and don’t want to read all the listings? No problem! Just click on Images along the top of the Google page, and your browser will be taken to a page of Mattel 1964 blonde doll images. Simply click on the one that looks like your little beauty, and read what that website has to say. You may even find out the approximate value of your treasure.
Remember- the value of an item is only what someone is willing to pay for it.
