Finding an inmate among the multitude of prisons can seem like a daunting task. There are thousands of facilities — federal, state, and county — across the country, many with prisoners of the same name. However, there are online resources that provide a route to finding specific inmates by using either their name or prisoner number. This can be used to find inmate locations, crimes and sentences, as well as contact information for the prison facilities in which they are located. Log onto the Internet and navigate to the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ “Inmate Locator” website. Enter the inmate’s prisoner ID number or their first and last name in the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ “Inmate Locator” page and select “Search.” Verify that the correct inmate was retrieved in the search results.
