These “bad sectors” of the hard drive must be identified so that they can be circumvented in order to continue using the hard drive correctly. Both PC and Mac computers come with software that can be used to identify bad sectors on a hard drive. Once they have been used, a commercial hard drive repair program can disable the corrupted hard drive sectors from being used. Go to “Start,” “My Computer” and right-click on the icon of the hard drive that is to be checked for bad sectors. Choose “Properties” from the pop-up window.
