One dead giveaway that you are going to give them a party or a present is to ask when their birthday is. It’s usually better to find another way to get this information. Mention the birthday of someone else in the office to see if your friend will let slip about their own birthday. Or start discussing astrological signs to see if you can wheedle the information out of them that way. Check to see if your company maintains an “event” board that notes things like days without an accident, employee of the month and anniversaries of employment.
