North America is divided into 11 plant hardiness zones based on the minimum winter temperatures in the zones. Zone 1 represents the coldest zone while Zone 11 represents the warmest zone. You should determine your plant growing zone before selecting plants for your yard. If you select a plant that can’t tolerate the cold in your zone, it will likely die when winter hits. Go to the website for the United States National Arboretum. Click on the “USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map” link. Then click the “Take Me Right to the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map” link. Click on your state’s abbreviation located just beneath the map. Locate your county and identify what color it is shaded. Match the color with the key to the right of the picture to determine your zone. Consider extraneous factors that can alter the plant hardiness zone.
