A federal identification number (officially an Employer Identification Number or EIN) is issued by the IRS. Any company, government agency, nonprofit organization or even sole proprietorships must have an EIN if they have employees. Some organizations have more than one EIN. A federal identification number is a unique nine-digit code that is primarily intended as a tax ID, but is also used to reference and find information about businesses. Look on your W-2 form if you need the federal identification number for your employer. The EIN is in box (b) to the right of your name and address.
