The Social Security Administration has two programs that provide income for persons who cannot work. If you are unable to work due to illness, injury, or a permanent disability, you may be eligible. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) pays benefits to people who have worked and paid into the Social Security system. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provides assistance to children or people who have not worked enough to qualify for SSDI. Decide if you may qualify for SSDI or SSI. If you are injured, become ill, or otherwise become disabled and have or will be unable to work for at least 12 months as a result, you may be eligible for SSDI.
