“A conservative upstream ferry, a less aggressive ferry, can be used when your crew is able to keep pace with the speed of the river coming downstream or understanding that they’ll lose only a small amount of ground. A very effective way to get from one side of the river to the other in an area that’s moving slowly downstream. It’s a great way to avoid obstacles such as rocks, or tress, or strainers down in the river and enables you to move from one side of the river without losing too much ground. It’s not a terribly complicated move to do. If your raft can point completely straight upstream so it’s in line parallel with the current coming down. If your crew can paddle at the same speed as the current, the raft won’t move anywhere. Then if the raft guide opens up the angle just ever so slightly, then the river will push on that side of the rock with the crew paddling at the same speed of the river, and with that angle, created you slowly side slip from one side of the river to the oth
