How do you feel about the research lab being moved from Plum Island to the mainland?
Well, it is obvious how you feel about it. My self, I really haven’t made up my mind yet. I’ve read a lot about moving the lab from Plum Island, both from your point of view and the advantages of moving it. Homeland Security said that the Island is not secure and is susceptible to terrorists threat. This would be far more devastating than a leak. There are several states competing to get the new facility. There many experts that say the new facility will be far more secure and techniques have vastly improved over the old lab. Texas is leading the competition to win the new lab: Kansas, Georgia, North Carolina and Mississippi are also vying for the 520,000-square-foot facility, which is scheduled to be operational by 2014. The Texas pitch, which is being coordinated by UT-San Antonio, the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio and several research foundations, has a bastion of support – everyone from Gov. Rick Perry and Sen. John Cornyn to cattle raisers at the fabled King and Briscoe
