11 baby deaths now linked to Simplicity cribs December 17, 2009 23:30 EST WASHINGTON (AP) — Four years after the recall of Simplicity-manufactured cribs started, officials say the number of reported baby deaths linked to the products has risen to 11 — a sharp increase from the four deaths reported in earlier recall announcements. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the most recent death was in September when a baby in Kentucky was trapped in the crib after a part of it broke. The agency also says it’s aware of 25 other incidents involving drop-side parts detaching from the cribs. More than 2 million Simplicity drop-side cribs have been recalled so far. The crib’s hardware can break or deform, causing the drop-side to detach and create a space where babies can potentially suffocate. The consumer protection agency says people should check their cribs and if they have a recalled Simplicity crib, it says they should stop using them immediately.
