Hermit crabs are an excellent pet because they don’t require a great deal of special care. Because they are scavenger animals, feeding the hermit crab is relatively low stress, You don’t have to worry about going to a fish store and spending a small fortune on specialized crab foods. All you have to do is raid your own refrigerator. Do not give your hermit crabs any of your sugary treats. While your body might be able to metabolize the sugar and preservatives, your crab’s won’t. Make sure that the food you are feeding your hermit crab is all natural. Your hermit crab will do best on a diet that is rich with calcium, carotene and anti-oxidants. Supplement your hermit crabs food with small amounts of vegetables that are high in carotene, such as carrots or corn. You will know your hermit crab needs more carotene in its diet if it fades from a bright reddish orange color to a washed out shade of brown.
