How Do You Fatten Up Compost Worms?
There are a couple of reasons why one would want to fatten up compost worms. Fattened worms can be resold as breeders to other composters, or as bait for fishermen. Fattening them up simply means providing them with the right diet supplement to double their size. This recipe for a grain supplement is recommended by The Organic Worm Farm, which runs the blog “Worm Composting.” This article assumes that you already have a worm bin set up with worms, with five to six inches of newspaper bedding in place. Place 12 eggshells into a blender and pulse until they are a powder. Add 2 cups oatmeal and 1 cup cornmeal, each in small amounts, continuing to pulse until the ingredients are mixed. Sprinkle the dry mixture over the top of the worm bin. Spray down this mixture with water using the spray bottle. Place a thin layer of shredded newspaper on top and spray this down, too. Leave the bins uncovered. Repeat this as needed daily every two days.
