DNA is an exciting topic and lots of fun to learn about in science class. The scientific name is deoxyribonucleic acid. This molecule is fragile, small and found within the nucleus of cells. The molecule is twisted into a helix and the two separate strands are held together by hydrogen bonds. DNA contains the instructions for the cells to function in very specific ways. Your DNA is what makes you who you are. You can extract DNA from your own cells to use for science projects and experiments. Refrigerate the bottle of isopropyl alcohol overnight. When you are ready to do the extraction, immerse the isopropyl alcohol bottle in the bowl with the ice. Set the bowl aside. Add 1 teaspoon of salt to 100 ml of tap water in one of your flasks or beakers. Stir the salt into the water until it dissolves. You will use the saltwater to collect your DNA. Set the flask aside.
