Represented by the CAB file extension, a cabinet file stores a group of compressed files within a single file, in a similar manner to the more common Zip file format. CAB files are most often used to compress software program files for distribution, and are best known for their association with the installation of ActiveX controls in the Internet Explorer Web browser. Extract the contents of a CAB file by running the appropriate command in an archiving application that supports the format. Download archiving software that supports the CAB file format.
