How Do You Explore Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument?
Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument celebrates the Sonoran Desert. Drive a lonely road, hike a backcountry trail, camp beneath a clear desert sky, marvel at magnificent cactus, or soak in the warmth and beauty of the Southwest. Let’s see what we can see. Take a scenic Ajo Mountain Drive. It is a 21 mile, mostly gravel, road usually passable by normal passenger car. Don’t take an RV over 24 feet because the road twists, dips and turns. Take a guided van tour. Sign up at the Kris Eggle Visitor Center. Drive the Puerto Blanco Drive. Stop along the way to see wonderful views of the Sonoran Desert. Bikes are allowed on all roads if they are open to vehicle traffic. Go bird watching. The Gila Woodpecker is one of several hundred species birders look for in the monument. Organ Pipe sits along a primary migratory flyway and, consequently, birding is a popular and fantastic recreational opportunity.
