Integration is a process which enables a society to exist as a coherent unit, in spite of differences between individuals. The dangers of a divided society are clear and already evident. At the heart of the Canadian social model is a cohesive society, based on values of solidarity, individual and collective rights and responsibilities and active citizenship. Social cohesion is a key factor for economic progress. Many minorities and other historically marginalized groups are excluded from the public debate and so feel alienated from the community development.
