The break out step is not very difficult and should be relatively easy for even a beginning tap dancer to master. The break out step in tap dancing makes six sounds and is done to the count of “and, 1, and, 2, and, 3.” Put on your tap shoes and start dancing. Flap forward on your right foot on the count of “and, 1.” When you flap, you brush your foot forward and then put your weight down on the ball of the foot that you’re using so that the other foot is free to use. Step down to the back on your left foot on the count of “and.” Shuffle on your right foot on the count of “2, and.” A shuffle consists of brushing your foot forward and backward. Strike the ball of your foot on the floor when you brush. Do not dance flat footed. Hop on your left foot on the count of “3.” Remember the steps: flap, step, shuffle, hop. Remembe
