I think that the surface temperature of any star can be estimated from its position on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram of main sequence stars. And the temperatures in the H-R diagram were originally determined from spectroscopic analysis of the ionization states of different elements, since different elements ionize to different degrees at different temperatures.
